FAR: What is provided?
One Freeman Artist Fellow is selected each year. The awardee, if residing in Charlottesville, VA, will receive a studio, a $1'000 materials stipend and mentorship via UVa Studio Arts faculty & visiting artists. In the instance of artists working remotely, they will receive an increased stipend of $1'500. As the program is evolving to venues in Greece and Wales, additional creative and travel opportunities may be provided, pending funding. The residency concludes with an exhibition opportunty in Athens, Greece and Swansea, Wales, with venue allocation and planning to be decided within the mentorship component of the FAR program.
FAR: Eligibility
Artists based in Charlottesville, Virginia will be given priority, although FAR offers a Fellowship for applicants regardless of geographical location. The Fellowship honors and platforms Diversity, Equity & Inclusion - artists who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+ & first-generation college graduates will be given priority. Please include this information in your application, and detail how DEI interescts with your creative practice and / or life experiences.
FAR: Fellowship Dates
November 1st 2026 through September 25th 2027. Visible Records will be the hosting venue for the provision of studio space for applicants based in Charlottesville.
FAR: Application Guidelines
Applications should contain the following as a single PDF File: a current CV; five images of recent work (within five years) with title, date, dimensions & materials of each work; an artist statement (max 750 words) which should include your eligibility & proposal of creative work for the fellowship.
